Artist Spotlight: Meng Lee — A Passion for Music, A Heart for Humility

Behind every artist is a story that goes beyond the music. For Meng Lee, his journey is shaped by the songs he grew up listening to, the lessons he has learned throughout his career, and the people who continue to inspire him. Balancing a career in law enforcement with his passion for singing, Meng is learning what it means to grow as an artist while staying grounded in who he is.

From Thailand to North Carolina

Born in Thailand in 1991, Meng Lee moved to California with his family in 1992. Having grown up in America, he naturally developed an American way of speaking, though his years living in North Carolina have added a little Southern accent to the mix.

His upbringing helped shape the person he is today, but music became another important part of his life through the songs he heard growing up with his parents. Those early experiences would eventually influence his own musical journey and the artist he continues to become.

Inspired by the OGs: The Music of Pov Thoj

For Meng, music has always been connected to his upbringing and the songs he grew up hearing at home. Among the many artists he listened to, one name stands above the rest: Pov Thoj.

Meng considers Pov Thoj his greatest of all time (GOAT) and his go-to OG Hmong artist. Artists such as Luj Yaj and Tub Lis Vam Khwb, along with Pov Thoj's broader catalog, left a lasting impression on him. While he appreciates the music of the older generation, Pov Thoj's work holds a special place in his heart.

That admiration reflects how music can connect generations. The songs that once filled his childhood continue to inspire his own relationship with singing today.

Finding Time to Practice Anywhere

For Meng, practicing does not always require a rehearsal room, a microphone, or a carefully planned schedule. Sometimes, the best opportunities to practice happen during everyday moments.

Whether he is in the shower, driving alone, or simply enjoying some quiet time, he finds opportunities to sing. He also recognizes the value of singing karaoke with others, where practice can become a shared experience.

His approach is simple: singing can happen almost anywhere. Sometimes, an artist needs privacy to focus and work through a song. Other times, it is about letting go and enjoying the moment without worrying too much about who might be listening.

The Moment That Made It All Worthwhile

One of Meng's most memorable performances happened recently at a fundraising event. While performing Nyob Ib Sab Ntuj, he heard something that made the experience especially meaningful: the audience singing the chorus alongside him.

For Meng, that moment brought genuine happiness.

Hearing a crowd sing along is more than an exciting experience onstage. It is a reminder that people are listening, connecting with the music, and remembering the songs. That shared moment gave him reassurance that his music is reaching an audience.

As an artist, receiving that kind of response can be incredibly rewarding. It transforms a performance from simply singing in front of people into a moment of connection between the artist and the listeners.

Staying Humble While Connecting With Fans

Meng values his relationship with his fans, both online and in person. However, he is still learning how to find the right balance between engaging with the audience and maintaining his focus during performances.

He admits that interacting with fans while performing can be a learning curve. Early in his journey, he sometimes found that engaging too much could cause him to lose his place in the music or miss a beat. As he continues to develop, he is learning when to interact and when to focus on the performance.

Beyond the stage, Meng tries to remain the same person online as he is offline. He believes humility is essential when communicating with others and understands that people are always paying attention to how an artist carries himself.

For him, it is not about appearing superior because he has a platform. It is about being mindful of his words, treating people respectfully, and remembering where he came from.

The Challenges of Growing as an Artist

Although Meng has found joy in performing, he is open about the challenges that come with becoming a stronger vocalist.

He continues to seek advice from other artists and learn how to improve his endurance. Questions about performing five or six songs in a set, becoming a headliner, and maintaining his voice through a 45-minute performance are all part of his learning process.

At times, he finds that his voice begins to tire after only a few songs, making it difficult to imagine sustaining a longer set. Rather than pretending to have all the answers, Meng acknowledges that there is still much to learn.

His honesty reveals an important part of his journey: passion may inspire someone to step onto the stage, but developing the skills to perform confidently and consistently takes time, practice, and guidance.

For Meng, the goal is not simply to become a better singer. It is to understand what it takes to become a more complete performer.

Lessons From a Career in Law Enforcement

Outside of music, Meng has spent more than a decade working in law enforcement. His professional experience has taught him how to communicate with people, navigate difficult situations, and work with others under pressure.

Interestingly, he says one of his biggest professional challenges is not dealing with the public, but working with coworkers. Over the years, he has learned how important teamwork and accountability are, especially in a career where people depend on one another.

He describes the difficulty of having to remind fellow adults to do things they should already know how to do. Because he spends so much time with his team, he sees his coworkers more often than he sees his own family. That makes it especially important for everyone to find a way to work together, even when personalities do not always align.

His perspective highlights a lesson that extends beyond law enforcement: working with people requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to get along, even when it is not easy.

A Mother's Advice That Changed Everything

One of the most meaningful lessons Meng carries with him came from his mother during the early days of his law enforcement career.

When he attended the police academy orientation, the director delivered a serious message to the group. He explained that the job was not for everyone, that some people were meant to call the police while others were meant to become the police, and that no one should expect to get rich from the profession. The attendees were free to leave, but anyone who returned the following day needed to be prepared.

The message stayed with Meng long after the orientation ended.

That night, he struggled to sleep. Having chosen this career, he suddenly found himself questioning whether he was ready for the commitment. With orientation scheduled to continue at 8 a.m. the next morning, he woke his mother early and explained how he was feeling.

Her response was straightforward but powerful: he needed to stop being afraid. If he had something he wanted to pursue, he needed to give it his all.

Those words lifted the heavy feeling he had been carrying. With his mother's encouragement, Meng moved forward, and the rest became history.

Her advice continues to reflect a mindset that applies to both his professional life and his musical journey. Fear and uncertainty may be part of pursuing something meaningful, but giving up before giving it a genuine chance can mean missing out on what might have been.

A Love for Food, Family, and Adventure

When he is not working or performing, Meng enjoys the things that make life fulfilling outside of his professional responsibilities. He loves spending time with family, watching movies, playing soccer, traveling, and, above all, eating good food.

His love for food goes beyond simply enjoying a great meal. He can cook as well, and at one point, he seriously considered becoming a chef.

Traveling gives him another opportunity to explore different cultures through their food. By his own estimate, around 70 percent of the time he spends traveling is dedicated to trying something new to eat.

His enthusiasm for food has also introduced him to creators such as The Food Ranger and Mark Wiens, whose food and travel content he follows on YouTube and social media.

Looking ahead, Meng would love to pursue a similar path: traveling around the world, discovering new foods, sharing those experiences with an audience, and building a living around something he genuinely enjoys.

For someone who values both new experiences and good food, that dream brings together several of his favorite things.

More Than Music: A Journey Still Unfolding

Meng Lee's story is about more than becoming a singer. It is about balancing different responsibilities, learning from experience, appreciating the people who have shaped his life, and remaining humble throughout the process.

From growing up listening to Pov Thoj to hearing an audience sing along with him at a fundraiser, music has given Meng opportunities to connect with others in ways that continue to motivate him. At the same time, his career in law enforcement and his mother's encouragement have helped shape the discipline and perspective he brings to his life.

He is the first to acknowledge that he still has much to learn as an artist. Whether it is improving his vocal endurance, becoming more comfortable onstage, or discovering new opportunities beyond music, Meng remains open to advice and growth.

His journey is still unfolding, and that may be what makes his story worth following. He is not presenting himself as someone who has already mastered everything. Instead, he is an artist who continues to learn, work hard, and enjoy the process while staying true to himself.

As Meng Lee continues to develop his sound and connect with listeners, one thing remains clear: his passion for music is supported by a desire to grow, a respect for the people around him, and a willingness to give his best to whatever he chooses to pursue.
